“This is a great service to the Uzbek community and ultimately to the whole Afghan nation,” Dr. Muhammad Ayaz Niazi, one of the most prolific Afghan religious scholars, told OnIslam.net.

According to the Al-Azhar graduate, the translation of the holy Quran into Uzbek would do wonders in a bid to enrich Uzbek brother with the teachings of Islam.

“Uzbek brothers can now take pride in also having the teachings of Islam available to them in their mother tongue that would ultimately pave many ways of learning for them”, Dr. Niazi, who is the head Imam of capital Kabul’s Wazir Akbar Khan Jamia Mosque said.

He added that each ethnic group in the multi-ethnic Afghan society has its own set of prides and honors that ultimately adds flavors to a collective Muslim society.

The great honor of translating the noble Qur’an was earned by Maulana Abdul Haseeeb Hasseb, a religious scholar in northern Baghlan province.

Recognizing his remarkable efforts, Haseeb was honored in the Uzbek heartland of Fayab in a gathering last week.

Addressing the gathering, Maulana Haseeb said the main purpose for this unique translation was to enlighten the Uzbek community with the holy teachings of Islam enshrined in the holy Qur’an.

“We have an organization called Qur’anic Teachings Foundation that is striving for promoting religious education across the country,” Maulvi Haseeb said while informing the gathering about his background.

He added that it took him seven years to translate the holy Qur’an into Uzbaki and now he plans to publish at least 2000 copies of it in a bid to make it available across the country.

There are around 5 million ethnic Uzbeks residing in the north western provinces like Faryab, Badghis and Jawzjan.

Due to the rough terrain and persistent poverty in this part of the country, Uzbek remains one of the most backward and deprived ethnic group in the warn-torn Afghanistan.

Praise

Religious scholars and society elders in the Uzbek heartland have praised this endeavor, stressing the importance of learning Arabic language as well.

Maulvi Assadullah Jamali, a local scholar, said on the occasion that this translation was the utter need of the hour.

“What Maulana Haseeb has done is truly amazing, we had the translation of the holy Qur'an in Pashto, Dari and even English language but we're badly missing it in our own Uzbaki language,” he stressed.

Maulvi Ismail Mujahid, a local elder, in his remarks noted that the unmatchable service by Maulana Haseeb would be remembered for very long time.

“We feel proud of him and plead to Allah may his prayers be answered,” he said.

Maulana Haseeb has five other religious books to his credit. The man has so far translated Qaida-e-Afghani, Aqaid-e-Zaroori, Masail Zaroriat-e-Deeni, Jamia Wa Ikhlaq-e-Islami and Wajaib Wo Fazail-e-Ikhlaqi Zan wo Mard into Uzbek.

Translation of the Qur'an has never been an easy task, considering that one has to have a good command of the source language, as well as been fully aware of the religious sensitivities associated with it. The holy Qur’an has so far been translated into most of languages spoken across the globe, over one hundred languages.

In the case of Afghanistan, the devotee Muslim nation of around 500 million has had the holy Quran translated into main Pashto and Dari languages for decades.

Qur’anic teachings are the integral part of public and private school curriculum and are widely taught at religious seminaries across the country.

As the religious scholars Dr Niazi and Maulana Haseeb emphasized, the state and society must now join hands to fully utilize the benefits that Islamic teachings offer for building and developing a peaceful and prosperous society.

The Qur’an is a revelation from God, the Creator of the worlds, so He is the original author.

There is only one Qur’an which is in Arabic and many translations of the Qur’an in several languages.

There could be multiple translations by different authors in the same language such as English.

The Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the archangel Gabriel who used to make the Prophet memorize the Qur’an and made him revise it every year in the month of Ramadan, the fasting month.
