Army soldiers in Afghanistan backed by security personnel have killed more than 30 Taliban militants and wounded several others in a series of clean-up operations carried out across the war-torn country over the past 24 hours.

The Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that 38 militants were killed during operations in Badakhshan, Ghazni, Helmand, Herat, Kandahar, Kunduz and Sar-e Pol provinces.

The statement added that as many as eight militants were also wounded during the operations.

Meanwhile, the deputy provincial police chief in the northern Jowzjan Province, Abdul Hafiz Khashi, said ten soldiers were killed early on Tuesday when a fellow trooper collaborated with an unspecified number of terrorists, and let them into a checkpoint in the Qush Tepa district of the province to kill his comrades.

The soldier, identified as Mohammad Alim, and the assailant later fled the scene, and a search operation is underway to capture them.

Also on Tuesday, five police officers lost their lives when their vehicle touched off an improvised explosive device in the Dawlat Abad district of the northern Balkh Province.

Spokesman for the provincial police chief Sher Jan Durani said three officers were also wounded in the blast.

Afghanistan continues to face insecurity 14 years after the US and its allies invaded the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.

Although the invasion removed Taliban from power, many areas in the country are still beset with insecurity.
