UN SCThe United Nations Security Council has condemned terrorist attacks carried out by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) across Iraq.

During a closed-door meeting on Thursday, the members also demanded that different political

factions in Iraq reach an agreement on fighting the terrorists.

But the members did not suggest action against the Takfiri militants.

This came after the Iraqi parliament adjourned a meeting to vote on declaring a nationwide state of emergency, a plan proposed by the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Maliki demanded that the assembly grant his government additional powers to fight the Takfiri militants.

On June 10, Iraq’s northern Nineveh Province fell into the hands of the militants. The Takfiri attacks have reportedly forced more than half a million people in and around Nineveh’s provincial capital, Mosul, to flee their homes.

They also managed to take control of two areas in Diyala Province on Thursday.

Meanwhile, ISIL spokesman, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, called on the militants to march on toward the Baghdad and Karbala.

Takfiri groups are reportedly entering Iraq from neighboring Syria and Saudi Arabia to undermine security in the country.

Russia blames the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq and its failure to train and equip the Iraqi army as the roots of the crisis in Iraq.
