Bahrain protestsPeople in Bahrain have held fresh anti-regime demonstrations as Manama refuses to hand over the body of a dead protester.

Clashes erupted in Eker Village and Jidd Hafs and Sitra cities after security forces attacked the protesters.

The demonstrators responded to the raids by throwing Molotov cocktails.

The protesters were angered by the regime’s refusal to give the body of Abulaziz al-Abbar, who died 11 days ago. The 27-year old man died after 55 days in a coma due to injuries he suffered during crackdown on a rally held in late February in Sa’ar, a residential area west of the capital, Manama.

According to Bahrain’s Center for Human Rights, security forces had fired tear gas canisters and birdshot at Abbar. The rights body said initial reports indicate that the victim was shot at close range.

Since mid-February 2011, thousands of pro-democracy protesters have held numerous demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.

In March 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were called in to help Manama quash the anti-regime protests.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.
