Bahrain protestThe Bahrain Observatory for Human Rights has called on the Manama regime to respond objectively to the concerns raised by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) over human rights violations in the country.

On Tuesday , Sheikh Maytham al-Salman, the head of the religious freedoms unit in the Bahrain Observatory for Human Rights, said that if the Bahraini regime fails to consider the concerns raised by the 46 members of the OHCHR in a recent statement, it will face consequences in the 27th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) in September, 2014.
The OHCHR members earlier in the day expressed deep concern over the Al Khalifa regime’s crackdown on peaceful protesters and the torture of inmates who are in jail for exercising their human rights. It also condemned the imprisonment of journalists and anti-regime demonstrators and asked for the establishment of an office with a full mandate in the Persian Gulf country.
“Establishing a country office for the OHCHR, without limiting its activities to technical assistance and capacity-building, will contribute to professional dealing with the ongoing systematic human rights violations in Bahrain. And thus, the reduction in the growth of the violations committed by the authority,” Salman said.
He further termed the OHCHR statement as a practical step that urged the Al Khalifa regime to address these concerns.
Since mid-February 2011, thousands of pro-democracy protesters have held numerous demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain, calling on the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.
According to local sources, scores of people have been killed and hundreds arrested.
Physicians for Human Rights says doctors and nurses have been detained, tortured, or disappeared because they have “evidence of atrocities committed by the authorities, security forces, and riot police” in the crackdown on anti-government protesters.
