Majid Milda was arrested on Wednesday after being accused of provoking an anti-government campaign in the Persian Gulf country, according to activists.

Before his arrest, Milda had said that the Al Khalifa regime, which rules Bahrain, had been ignoring threats by the ISIL Takfiri terrorist group to target mosques in the country.

His comments came after a string of recent attacks by ISIL on Shia worshipers in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

In a post on his Twitter account, before being arrested, Milda stressed that Bahraini Shias would not leave mosques empty because of ISIL threats.

The opposition leader’s arrest has triggered condemnation inside and outside Bahrain.

Activists have promised to take to the streets in protest of his arrest.

Demonstrations against the Al Khalifa family have intensified recently after the sentencing of the leader of Al-Wefaq, Sheikh Ali Salman, to four years in jail.

The Manama regime has been intolerant of figures opposing Al Khalifa rulers and their backers.

Bahraini opposition groups have unanimously called for the release of all political dissidents who have been imprisoned, stressing that only a political solution, and not the use of force, would end the political crisis in the Persian Gulf island nation.

Since mid-February 2011, thousands of anti-regime protesters have held numerous demonstrations on the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa family to relinquish power.

Many people have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the crackdown on peaceful demonstrations ever since.
