A Bahraini regime's court has upheld the unjust detention of prominent human rights activist Nabeel Rajab as he faces trial on charges of allegedly insulting a state institution and neighboring Saudi Arabia online.

According to a Wednesday statement by Bahrain Centre for Human Rights which he head, the regime's court has declined to grant him bail.

The 51-year-old activist, who had been pardoned for health reasons last year, was rearrested last month as part of an intensifying crackdown on opposition figures that has drawn protests from the United Nations.

Rajab appeared in court Tuesday and was charged with "insulting a statutory body, insulting a neighboring country and disseminating false rumors in time of war," the Bahrain Center for Human Rights said.

Since his arrest on 13 June 2016 on separate charges, Rajab has been detained in solitary confinement with no contact with other prisoners and in very poor conditions. He is currently being detained at West Riffa police station. He is being denied the minimum standards of the treatment of prisoners, which has been the cause for deterioration of his health,

He may face more than 10 years in prison if convicted, for which he was already detained from 2 April to 13 July 2015. Despite the charges having first been made over a year ago, today’s court hearing was Rajab’s first for this case.

The Bahraini opposition has been confronting the Al Khalifa regime's oppression and repressive measure since 2011 when a wide revolution erupted across the country, demanding that the authorities grant all the citizens their basic political and social rights.
