A top Iranian security official said on Monday that the country's security forces have been closely monitoring the situation in the region and are fully prepared to counter any possible threats from the ISIL terrorist group.

“Over the past few months, we considered the all possible scenarios in connection with the ISIL in Iraq, discussed the consequences and opportunities brought by each of the scenarios regarding the country’s security, defined procedures of each part and prepared ourselves for any situation by monitoring the regional and internal conditions,” Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs General Hossein Zolfaqari told reporters in Tehran on Monday.

As regards the possible infiltration of the ISIL elements into Iran, the official underlined that the country’s intelligence service keeps a close watch on the whole areas and has a stranglehold on the movement of foreign nationals in particular.

He assured the nation that the ISIL could not pose any threat to Iran, and added, “We are prepared to encounter any condition that might be abused by the terrorist groups, such as the ISIL.”

The ISIL is a militant group operating in Iraq and Syria which is believed to be supported by the West and some regional Arab countries. The terrorist group claims as an independent state the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, occupied Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.

The extremist group, which controls parts of Syria's northern territory, sent its fighters into neighboring Iraq in June, quickly seizing swathes of land straddling the border between the two countries.
