Certain countries have instigated terrorism in Iraq to hinder the country’s potential quantum leap in the Middle East region, Iran’s parliament (Majlis) speaker Ali Larijani says.

“Given Iraq’s energy resources, the country could have taken a giant step in the region. Therefore, some sought to block the [country’s] progress one way or another,” Larijani said in a meeting with the Iraqi foreign minister, Ibrahim al-Ja'afari, on Wednesday.

“Western countries and some regional states are seeking to disrupt peace and democracy in Iraq,” the top parliamentarian added.

Larijani further stressed that the malady of terrorism in Iraq is of utmost significance, adding that a realistic approach should be adopted to cope with the scourge.

“The more active the ISIL terrorist group is, the more tribal and political conflicts” will exist in Iraq, Larijani said, noting that some states benefit from the crisis in the Arab county.

Terrorist currents drain the energy resources of the regional countries in the interest of the Tel Aviv regime, he said.

“Some countries in the region currently support terrorism,” Larijani said, adding, “Iran in the current situation is trying to help Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria, so that they can succeed in fighting terrorism.”

“The threats of terrorism and the Zionist regime [of Israel] are the two blades of a pair of scissors which are targeting the interests of the Islamic community,” he added.

The Iraqi foreign minister, for his part, said that Baghdad is seeking to mobilize the whole region to fight against terrorism, adding, “more time is required” to that end.

He further praised Iran’s support for Iraq, describing cooperation between the two countries as “significant”.

The ISIL terrorists control some parts of Syria and Iraq. They are engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control.

Since late September, the US and its allies have been conducting airstrikes against the ISIL inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.

Washington has also been carrying out similar air raids against ISIL positions in Iraq since August. However, the raids have so far failed to dislodge the ISIL.
