The Supreme Leader's top Adviser, Ali Akbar Velayati, said the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group has been created by Washington in line with a broader plot to spread Islamophobia.

The United States created the ISIL in a bid to tarnish the image of Islam, and to tell the world that returning to the teachings of Islam means returning to the Barbarian era, Velayati said.
He made the remarks in a Tuesday international congress held in Tehran for consultation among the foreign guests of the anniversary of the victory of Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution.
“These (people) burned the Jordanian pilot and beheaded the Japanese nationals to tell the world that returning to Islam will result in brutality,” he stressed.
He further slammed Western media for showing the pictures and videos of ISIL terrorists beheading their hostages, and said that they (media) seek to suggest that such groups like the ISIL are the leaders of an Islamic state.
The so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant is a terrorist group believed to be supported by the West and some regional Arab countries.
The terrorist groups made swift advances in northern and western Iraq over summer 2014, after capturing swaths of northern Syria.
However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of the ISIL offensive and resulted in the freedom of many towns and villages.
