In a message released on Thursday, Ayatollah Makarem said that popular movements, including the Egypt revolution, marked the end of “a dark era of dictatorship,” IRIB reported.

The valiant fervent uprising of the Egyptian people against a dictatorship which is dependent on the West and stands by Israel is an indication of the Egyptian nation's social, political and religious genius, he added.

The Ayatollah further pointed out that “justice, reasonable freedom, poverty eradication and non-interference of foreign countries in determining the fate of Muslims” were among demands of the Egyptian nation.

Ayatollah Makarem said that the key factor to lasting victory was to maintain unity, keep perseverance and choose a leader unanimously and warned against any foreign attempts to create divisions among the Egyptians.

“To save its interests, the enemy has invested all its hopes in creating divisions among revolutionaries,” he noted.

Egypt entered the tenth day of revolution protests on Thursday as the crackdown on demonstrators calling for the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak is turning more violent.

The protesters want Mubarak to end his 30-year rule, saying protests will continue until he resigns but the embattled president has so far defied widespread public calls for his resignation.

Egypt opposition defies army orders to stay home, saying protests will continue until Mubarak resigns. The opposition has called for another massive rally on Friday; a day which is called 'the day of departure' for Mubarak.

A report by the United Nations says at least 300 people have so far been killed and thousands more injured during nationwide protests in troubled Egypt.
