hussain_taebThe head of the intelligence bureau of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has revealed a US scheme to stage a velvet coup in Iran within a year.

"Their (US) plan for the next Iranian calendar year (starting on March 21, 2011) is to link sanctions [on the country] with the new round of [Iran's] targeted subsidy plan in order to portray Iranians as discontent in the first season and make a social wave," the IRGC intelligence
The targeted subsidy plan aims to remove all subsidies over a five-year period and instead give families cash handouts as compensation.

"On the other hand, they will increase security threats against the disciplinary forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran in an effort to exhaust them (the police force). They will launch a velvet coup in the fourth season," ISNA quoted Taeb as saying.

"In order to achieve its goals, the US needs to be presented as the brain of the world. They believe the brain needs a heart to survive and the new heart is the Persian Gulf," he told a gathering of the country's general and military prosecutors.

They seek to reconstruct the Middle East by resorting to measures against the Islamic Republic, he pointed out.

"They are pursuing three schemes: to destabilize the states around Iran, to breed instability in Iran, and finally to strike at the foundations of the Islamic Republic's establishment, Velayat-e-Faqih (rule by the just jurisprudent)."

Taeb accused the advisers of US President Barack Obama of drawing up different plans on Iran and noted that the US administration is following two diplomatic, three military, three domestic and one regional options to place restrictions on the Islamic Republic.

On the military options against Tehran, he said one would be an all-out US war, which is not well received by American officials as they believe the size of the deployed military in such a war should be in proportion with Iran's population and equal to two percent of the country's inhabitants.

He added that other options would include limited Israeli-US war against Iran.

Elaborating on the US aims of the velvet coup, the Iranian official said that the Americans seek to topple the Islamic establishment in Iran and to put a pro-US government in place.

The remarks were made after riots, backed by Washington and its allies, erupted in the Iranian capital, Tehran, and several other cities, following the country's 2009 presidential election.

Defeated presidential candidates Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, who are known as the leaders of the sedition movement, have been condemned for their role in the post-vote unrest.

"They [US officials] were hopeful that the attitude of the Islamic Republic would change [toward US] with their movement in the election," Taeb concluded.
