nawaz sharifIranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi has extended Iran's congratulations to Pakistan’s newly-elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on his election, pledging to improve mutual relations with Islamabad.

In a message to the new Pakistani premier on Wednesday, the Iranian spokesperson expressed confidence that the ties between Tehran and Islamabad would be further strengthened in various political, cultural and economic fields during Sharif’s tenure.

“During Nawaz Sharif’s tenure, the two countries will also witness the growing consolidation of peace and stability in Pakistan and across the region,” Araqchi added.

On Wednesday, Pakistani lawmakers endorsed Sharif as the country’s new prime minister, electing him to an unprecedented third term.

More than a decade after Sharif was ousted in a coup, the 63-year-old former two-time premier was elected for the position for a third time in Pakistan’s National Assembly.

During general elections held on May 11, Sharif’s center-right party secured 176 seats of the 342-member lower house of the assembly. His party received 244 votes in the 342-seat parliament.

Sharif served twice as prime minister in the 1990s before being ousted in a military coup. Following the coup, Sharif spent eight years in exile.
