aeoiHead of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi says the Geneva interim nuclear deal does not halt any of Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities.

Salehi stated on Wednesday that based on the agreement, Iran will continue to enrich uranium to five percent for a

six-month period.

“We have voluntarily agreed to suspend only the 20 percent enrichment in this 6-month period but this suspension does not mean the centrifuges for 20 percent enrichment will stop working,” he said, explaining that the centrifuges in question will be adapted to enrich uranium to 5 percent.

The AEOI chief added that Tehran will continue its nuclear research activities while the 40-megawatt heavy water rector near the city of Arak will move ahead with its operations.
Meanwhile, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the body will hold an extraordinary meeting on January 24 to discuss how Iran is to implement the landmark nuclear deal clinched in November last year.

The director general of the IAEA, Yukiya Amano, said the agency’s board of governors will also discuss how to undertake monitoring and verification of nuclear-related measures.
Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – Russia, China, France, Britain, and the US – plus Germany have agreed on January 20 as the date to begin implementing the landmark interim nuclear deal they clinched in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Under the deal sealed on November 24, 2013, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period.

It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions would be imposed on Iran within the same timeframe.
