Ayatollah Makarem-ShiraziA senior Iranian cleric has denounced life sentences for nearly 700 people in Egypt, saying such measures would make it easier for the Israeli regime to commit atrocities against Palestinians.

Speaking in the holy city of Qom on Wednesday, Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem-Shirazi

slammed an Egyptian court’s decision to execute 683 members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Egyptian government either does not have any idea about the number of people sentenced to death or “considers humans as animals,” Makarem-Shirazi said.

“Al-Azhar (clerics) have also kept silent in this regard and we criticize this issue,” the senior cleric added.

He also censured the Egyptian media for turning a blind eye on the sentences.

On Monday, Brotherhood supreme leader Mohamed Badie and other members of the group were sentenced to death.

A final decision is due to be released in June after approval from the Grand Mufti.

Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since the first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, was ousted on July 3. Hundreds have lost their lives in the ensuing violence across the country.

The Egyptians launched a revolution against Hosni Mubarak’s pro-Israeli regime on January 25, 2011, which eventually brought an end to the 30-year dictatorship of Mubarak on February 11, 2011.
