Representative of Iraq’s leading Shiite cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani said Iraq’s political groups are to blame for the current situation in the country.

In a meeting with Iraq’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq in the holy city of Karbala, Sheikh Abdul Mehdi al-Karbalai said tension among political factions have negatively affected Iraq, adding that this tension poses the greatest threat to the country.

Noting that Ayatollah Sistani has constantly urged politicians to give priority to national interests over factional gains, al-Karbalai said, Al-Masalah news website reported.
Also in the meeting, Al-Mutlaq referred to the terrorist activities of the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and said the extremist group is a threat not just to Iraq but to the whole world.
Violence erupted in Iraq when ISIL Takfiri militants took control of Mosul on June 10, which was followed by the takeover of Tikrit, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of the capital, Baghdad.
The Takfiri militants have terrorized entire communities, including Shiites, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians, Yazidis and others, as they continue their advances in Iraq.
