At least 17 people have been killed in a series of bomb attacks in a number of Shia cities in Iraq.

Iraqi officials said on Thursday that a bomb attack hit the city of al-Diwaniyah, killing six people and wounding 16 others.

Three more people were killed and 12 others suffered injuries in the holy city of Karbala after a car bomb went off near a bus stop.

Elsewhere, in the holy city of Najaf, a car bomb exploded near a restaurant, killing five people and wounding 12 others.

A bomb blast also hit an area near restaurants in the district of Baiyaa in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, claiming the lives of three people and wounding 12 others.

On Wednesday, 40 people lost their lives in a series of explosions targeting security forces and markets in the Iraqi capital.

Also on Wednesday, the Iraqi army launched a major offensive against the ISIL terrorists in the south of Iraq’s Salahuddin Province.

The major operation comes as the Iraqi army has recently been making advances in al-Dhuluiya and Khazraj areas in the province.

Iraq has been fighting the ISIL terrorists since they took control of Mosul on June 10. The terrorists currently control parts of eastern Syria and Iraq’s northern and western regions.

They have committed heinous crimes and threatened all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians and Izadi Kurds, during their advances in Iraq.

The terrorist group has links with Saudi intelligence, and is believed to be supported by the Israeli regime.
