Iraqi Kurdish forces have retaken the control of the northern town of Zumar as well as several nearby villages from the ISIL Takfiri terrorists after weeks of intense fighting.

Major General Karim Atuti of the Peshmerga security forces said on Saturday that after “clashes that began this morning…we were able to force (ISIL) militants from the center [of Zumar]” and eleven surrounding villages.

According to Kurdish intelligence sources in the town, Peshmerga forces advanced from five directions early in the day and despite ISIL militants’ fierce resistance, succeeded in recapturing Zumar, which is situated some 60 kilometers (37 miles) northwest of Mosul, the first Iraqi city to fall in the ISIL offensive in June.

The Takfiri terrorists overran Zumar and pushed Peshmerga forces out during an operation in August.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Iraqi security forces took control of most of the town of Jurf al-Sakhar near the capital, Baghdad.

Provincial governor, Sadiq Madloul, said on Saturday that Iraqi government forces managed to drive out ISIL militants “from the town of Jurf al-Sakhar today and now we are raising the Iraqi flag over the government offices.”

A commander and spokesman for Iraqi security forces also noted that some ISIL terrorists had escaped to the western city of Fallujah, which is under the control of the group, while clashes are still underway near a bridge linking Jurf al-Sakhar to Anbar Province.

The Iraqi troops have pledged to make more gains in the coming weeks.

The ISIL terrorists currently control large swathes of territory across Syria and Iraq. They have committed terrible atrocities in both countries, including mass executions and beheading of local residents as well as foreign nationals.
