Iraqi troops, backed by Shia fighters, have managed to recapture all 80 kilometers of the Imam Wais road, in the northeast of Diyala province.

The territorial gain, which was achieved on Wednesday, allows the Iraqi military to surround the last two ISIL terror group’s strongholds of al-Saadia, about 65 kilometers from central Diyala, and Jalawlaa city, about 75 kilometers to northeast of central Diyala.

The Iraqi military, along with Shia and volunteer forces, has also mounted an offensive to liberate the town of Hit in Iraq’s restive western province of Anbar.

The operation comes as Iraqi troops have already succeeded in freeing al-Doulab area near Hit from the ISIL Takfiri militants’ grip.

On November 17, an unnamed army brigadier general announced that the military plans to push ISIL militants out of the city of Tikrit, after having broken the terror group's siege on the town of Baiji and its refinery earlier in November.

The Takfiri militants gained control of Mosul, the capital of Iraq’s Nineveh Province, in June, which was followed by the fall of Tikrit, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of the capital, Baghdad.

The terrorists currently control large swathes of land in Iraq and neighboring Syria.

The Iraqi army has so far managed to make numerous gains in the fight against the ISIL militants, pledging to continue the battle against the extremist group.

The ISIL militants have been carrying out horrific acts of violence, including public decapitations, against Iraqi communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians.
