Terrorist attacks in Iraq’s Samarra leave 4 killed

Four people were killed and 18 more wounded when two bomb blasts and several mortar rounds rocked the city late Monday in what has been described as reprisal attacks by ISIL Takfiri terrorists.

The attacks began with firing of mortar shells on Samarra before two bombers blew up their explosives in Bu Nisan area. The third bomber was killed before he could blow up his explosives, an anonymous source in the Iraqi army told Iraqi News.

The attacks were apparently meant to kill volunteer fighters based in the area. Another potential bomber, wearing an explosive belt, was arrested before he could target the same district, the source said.

A curfew has been imposed on the area until further notice.

ISIL has lost large parts of its foothold in Samarra over the past weeks as Iraqi forces backed by volunteer fighters continue to push the terrorists out of the city.

Army troops on Friday regained control over a number of areas on the outskirts of Samarra and established security there. The area was hit by explosions a day earlier which saw three people, including a policeman, killed.

Located around 125 kilometers north of Baghdad, the holy city of Samarra is home to the shrines of the tenth and eleventh Shia Imams.
