According to al-Smuaria news, the militants destroyed the mosque’s building that dates back to the 12th century C.E. and plundered its belongings on Saturday night.

The so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS and IS), control swathes of land in Syria and Iraq.

The ISIL started its campaign of terror in Iraq in early June 2014. The heavily-armed militants took control of Mosul before sweeping through parts of the country’s Sunni Arab heartland.

The terror group has been carrying out horrific acts of violence including public decapitations and crucifixions against all communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians.

Earlier this month, members of the Takfiri terrorist group burned to death sixteen people in Mosul.

Local official Mowaffaq Hamid al-Azawi said that the ISIL members executed the victims in the western al-Islah neighborhood of the city, located some 400 kilometers (248 miles) north of the capital, Baghdad, after the men refused to pledge allegiance to the terrorist group’s leader, Ibrahim al-Samarrai aka Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Azawi further described Mosul as a big open-air prison, where residents are subjected to various kinds of torture and are suffering at the hands of the ISIL.
