The Iraqi army has repelled an attack by the Takfiri ISIL terrorist group on an army headquarters in the town of Karma in the restive province of Anbar.

A security source in the province said on Tuesday that a unit of the Iraqi army’s first brigade managed to repel the attack on its headquarters in Karma, located about 48 kilometers (30 miles) west of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, Iraqi media reported.

The source added that clashes broke out between the security forces and the ISIL elements in the area. Dozens of militants were killed in the fighting, the source said. No information was provided in reports on whether the Iraqi army suffered casualties.

In a separate development in Karma, Iraqi soldiers managed to gun down a sniper with the Takfiri group in the Harirat area of the town, according to an Iraqi security source.

The source added that another unit of the army managed to seize a weapons store of ISIL containing light and medium weapons during a security operation in the area of Dijla in the north of Karma.

On Monday, Iraqi troops and popular volunteer forces seized control of more than 10 major districts in the town of Karma, according to Sa’ad Maan, a spokesman for Iraq’s Defense Ministry.

The retaking of the districts has effectively cut off ISIL’s supply lines into Ramadi, which is currently under the control of the militants, said Maan.

Elsewhere, in Salahuddin Province, Iraqi Federal Police Chief Major General Raed Shakir Jawdat said in a statement on Tuesday that Iraqi security forces, backed by volunteer forces, killed 23 members of the ISIL terrorist group on Hamrin Mountains.

Major General Shakir also said Iraqi forces managed to destroy seven armored vehicles belonging to the terrorist group in the attack.

The ISIL terrorist group launched its offensive in Syria in March 2011. The ISIL expanded its campaign of violence to Iraq in June 2014, when its militants took control of Iraq’s second largest city, Mosul.
