At least 11 people have been killed in a major car bomb east of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Security and medical sources said on Monday that least 40 people were injured in the attack in a Shia-dominated neighborhood of Baghdad.

The blast, the third of kind in four days, reportedly took place near a cinema in Baghdad al-Jadida neighborhood.

There was no claim of responsibility although Daesh, a Takfiri group which controls territories in west and north of Iraq, has often carried out similar bombings in Baghdad.

Commercial and public places of Baghdad have often been the target of terrorist attacks by Daesh.

Twelve people were reported dead on Saturday after two separate car bomb attacks targeted security forces in Baghdad. Also on Friday, Daesh attacked a Shia mosque, killing nine people.

Iraq dealt a major blow to Daesh when its elite forces and allied tribal fighters managed to retake Ramadi, the capital of the western Anbar province, in late December.

Baghdad has vowed to clear the entire Iraqi soil from the Takfiri group in 2016.
