Amid a looming political tension in Iraq over the forming of a new government, the bloc of cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has called for a referendum among its supporters to decide about the next prime minister.

According to Shiite News, More than three weeks since the March 7 polls, little progress has been made in forming a coalition government, while negotiations between its main blocs have revealed key differences between the parties.

The elections result showed the exceed of Iraqiya, which won 91 parliamentary seats, by two seats on the State of Law's Coalition, which got 89 seats, while the Iraqi National Alliance got 70 seats and the Kurdistani Alliance had 43 seats.

The Sadr Trend announced that "According to the orders of Syed Muqtada al-Sadr the Trend will conduct a referendum to choose the figure who will assume the next Premier post."

Sadr spokesman Salah al-Ubaidi told a news conference on Wednesday that the ballots would have five names for the prime minister post — Maliki and Mohammed Jaffar al-Sadr from State of Law, INA (Iraqi National Accord) figures Adel Abdul-Mahdi and former Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, and Allawi.

Sadrists say they will accept the outcome of the referendum, which they believe would make it easier for them to choose whom to back as Iraq's next prime minister.

The referendum is scheduled to be held on Friday and Saturday
