Bombings, shootings leave eight dead in Iraq

shiitenews bomb iraqAs many as eight people have been killed and several others injured in separate attacks across Iraq.

Four policemen and three civilians were killed while three more police officers and a medic were wounded in two roadside bomb blasts at a checkpoint in the city of Samarra on Saturday.

A soldier was killed and two others injured in another roadside bomb explosion in the northern city of Mosul, while an army captain was killed in a similar incident near the town of Tal Afar, about 70 kilometers west of Mosul.

Two civilians were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in two separate attacks in villages in the Ninewa and Kirkuk governorates.

The bombings and shootings came after Friday’s attacks in which 13 people were killed and more than 50 wounded across Iraq.

The killings are the latest in a string of attacks that left more than 200 people dead across the country this June.

June 13 was the deadliest day of the month, when a wave of attacks claimed the lives of 70 people.

Since December 201, violence has intensified in Iraq after an arrest warrant was issued for fugitive Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, who has been charged with running a death squad targeting Iraqi officials and civilians.
