Police Lieutenant Colonel Jassim al-Bayati said on Sunday that suspected gunmen rounded up 25 men on the

road between the towns of Amerli and Suleiman Bek in northern Iraq, then shot and killed eight of them who were Shia Muslims.

Bayati added that four policemen were later injured by a roadside bomb that ripped through their vehicle when they went to investigate the scene of the killings at around 4:30 pm (1330 GMT).

Earlier on Sunday, three policemen were killed in two bomb explosions in the Iraqi town of Jurf al-Sakhr, 60 kilometres south of the capital.

Two men were also killed in a shooting in west Baghdad, according to an interior ministry official.

In another incident in the restive northern city of Mosul, gunmen attacked the house of an Asiacell mobile phone company employee, and shot him dead.

According to an AFP tally, Sunday attacks bring the number of casualties in the country so far this month to at least 127, including 61 security forces members.

Violence has increased in Iraq since December 2011 when an arrest warrant was issued for fugitive Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, who has been charged with running a death squad targeting Iraqi officials and Shia Muslims
