39 martyred, 52 injured in Attacks across Iraq

blast carAt least 39 people have been killed and 52 others injured in a series of attacks in central and northern Iraq.

According to police, 12 civilians were killed and 23 wounded on Monday after a bomb went off in a market in Tikrit, 170 kilometers north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

In another incident, gunmen in Mosul, which is also situated north of Baghdad, killed three provincial government employees and injured another.

In a separate attack by armed men in the city four police officers died, while three policemen lost their lives in an assault on a checkpoint. A local mayor was also killed in another attack.

Officials also stated that a series of attacks in Baquba and Kirkuk killed sixteen people and wounded many more.

According to estimates by the United Nations, around 1,000 people were killed in Iraq in October alone.

Violence has surged across Iraq in recent months, reaching its highest level since 2008.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has said that attacks in Iraq aim to “reignite sectarian strife” and divide the country.
