iraq blastSaudi Arabia is sparing no effort to derail the process of democratization in Iraq, a Middle East expert tells Press TV in an interview.

“Saudi Arabia has sought, since day one, to destabilize, discredit, [and] derail the fledgling democracy in Iraq with the

ultimate goal of dismantling the entire democratic process in Iraq,” Zayd al-Isa said.

He added that since the overthrow of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, in 2003, “Saudi Arabia has been vehemently opposed, and fiercely against that democratic change in Iraq.”

Al-Isa noted that Saudi Arabia views any democratic process in the Arab world “as a major existential threat to its tyrannical dictatorship.”

Around 6,000 people have lost their lives in the ongoing violence in Iraq since the beginning of 2013.

According to a recent academic study published in the United States, more than 460,000 people in Iraq lost their lives between 2003 and 2011 as a result of the US-led invasion of the country.

The study found that more than 60 percent of deaths were directly attributable to violence, and the rest were associated with the collapse of infrastructure and other indirect causes.

Iraq says militants have launched an open war in Iraq and they want to push the Middle Eastern country into chaos.

“That proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that all this funding from Saudi Arabia has gone to revive and reinvigorate al-Qaeda in Iraq,” said al-Isa.

He stated that the prevailing violence in Iraq is sparking a “civil war” in this country.
