Deputy Secretary General of Hezbollah Sheikh Naim Qassem said US President Barack Obama seeks to justify Washington's failure in Syria by talking about plans to arm Syrian opposition.

Sheikh Qassem said in interview with the Tasnim News Agency, the United States has been sending weapons to anti-government militants operating in Syria for three and a half years and Obama’s remarks about plans to arm opposition groups is only aimed at justifying Washington’s defeats in Syria so far.
“He (Obama) thought his objective of overthrowing the Syrian government could be realized in three months. Three and a half years have passed now and none of his objectives (in Syria) have been realized,” he said.
The senior Hezbollah official described Obama’s remarks about arming Syrian opposition groups as a political gimmick.
Obama has asked the US Congress to authorize $500 million to train and arm what he called moderate Syrian rebels.

Sheikh Qassem further criticized Washington’s conduct with regards to the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), saying that despite its rhetoric, the White House is not serious about destroying ISIL.
Obama on Wednesday said the United States is prepared to expand its bombing campaign against ISIL terrorists and launch airstrikes in Syria.
"I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq," Obama said during a speech delivered from the White House.
"America will lead a broad coalition to roll back this terrorist threat," he added.
Sheikh Qassem said the US seeks to curb ISIL activities but has no plans to destroy it because while ISIL is posing a threat to some of US plans and interests, the terrorist group helps American polices by spreading discord in the region.
Deputy Secretary General of Hezbollah, who paid a visit to Tasnim on Thursday, arrived in Tehran earlier this week to take part in the International Conference of the Islamic World Scholars in Defense of Palestinian Resistance.
More than 400 scholars from various countries attended the two-day event, which kicked off in the Iranian capital on Tuesday.
