The French top diplomat, who became a “close friend” to some Lebanese politicians thanks to his various visits to Beirut, held a series of meetings in the Lebanese capital, stressing once again his country’s “commitment” to Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability as well as international resolution 1701 and, of course, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

According to the Shiite News,The visit was remarkable,
Moussawi, who met Kouchner at the French embassy, discussed with him the latest developments at the local and regional scenes, according to a statement released by Hezbollah media relations.

The Resistance party’s international relations official explained to Kouchner Hezbollah stances regarding the international investigation in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri’s case. He told him that Hezbollah was the most negatively-affected party by Hariri’s murder, given that its repercussions sought to form a “siege” on the Resistance.

While wondering about the reasons preventing some parties to transfer the false witnesses’ file to the Judicial Council in case they were concerned with uncovering the truth as they always claim, Moussawi told Kouchner that the course of the investigation proved since its beginning to include very dangerous violations which made it subject and unprofessional.

The Hezbollah official went on to say that the Israeli enemy was, in contrast, the party which benefited the most of the assassination. A lot of Israeli goals were achieved following the February 14 crime, Moussawi said, noting in this context the degradation of Lebanese-Syrian relations as well as the tensions that erupted internally among different Lebanese parties and groups.

Despite all this, Moussawi remarked that the evidence presented by Hezbollah to turn Israel from an “innocent” to just a “suspect” and nothing more were not seriously taken by the investigation committee.

Moussawi expressed belief that the United States was seeking to use the international tribunal as a tool in its war against the Resistance. Therefore, he called on France not to join the US in its unfair campaign and keep its independent policy towards Lebanon and the region, taking into consideration the sensitiveness of the Lebanese status-quo and stability. “Lately, some French statements were not contributing in consolidating security in Lebanon,” he emphasized.

The Hezbollah official, meanwhile, stressed that the Resistance party was concerned with achieving justice and reaching truth, differentiating in this context between absolute truth and politicized truth, the one the international tribunal is seeking to impose on Lebanese.

Ahead of the meeting, Kouchner questioned the uproar over the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, stressing that it was “born out of an international decision and with the approval of the international community.”

He made his statements after holding talks with Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir that also tackled the situation in the region, which the French official described as dangerous.

The threats in the Middle East are not limited to the Christians, given the recent attack in Iraq, but the Sunnis and Shiites are also at risk, the French top diplomat said.

He later held talks with his Lebanese counterpart Ali al-Shami on the situation in the region, during which the latter stressed the need to restart dialogue on the regional scene.

The Progressive Socialist Party issued a statement revealing that its leader, MP Walid Jumblatt, had held a meeting with Kouchner at the French embassy on Saturday during which latest developments were addressed.

The French Foreign Minister then held talks with Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel at the French embassy.

Meanwhile, a top French diplomat on Saturday appealed for calm in Lebanon amid a widening crisis over the STL's impending indictment in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. “We call on all political actors in Lebanon to remain calm, serene, and responsible, and that is the purpose of Kouchner's visit,” the diplomat told
