The Democratic Gathering is Jumblatt’s parliamentary bloc while the PSP is his political party.

NEWSPAPERS

Lebanese newspapers in their editions on Friday, said that Jumblatt has decided his position backing the opposition’s stance.An-Nahar daily said:” MP Walid Jumblatt gave the March 8 side what pleased it and the March 14 side what did not upset it.”

Al-Akhbar said: “Walid Jumblatt did it and did not do it. He clearly defined his Progressive Socialisty Party’s stance in support of Syria and the Resistance, but he did not talk about the stance of the Democratic Gathering [parliamentary bloc], whose death must be mourned at the first possible opportunity.

Jumblatt announced his stance, departing his middle position and joining one of the two projects. In his press conference, he announced that the Progressive Socialist Party MPs would be at the side of Syria and the Resistance, with MP Elie Aoun in addition.”

While As-Safir said: “MP Walid Jumblatt decided the political direction that he will take by announcing his final positioning [of his] party at the side of the Resistance and Syria, although he succeeded in leaving the final situation regarding the numbers [of votes provided to March 8 by the Democratic Gathering bloc] within the circle of ambiguity.

Sources indicated that Jumblatt confirmed to the Democratic Gathering MPs that he will nominate [Omar] Karami [as prime minister], announcing that the party MPs will abide by this order.”

HARIRI’S PAPER OF CONDITIONS

During his press conference, Jumblatt held up a compromise document signed by the caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri concerning the Syrian-Saudi initiative.

An-Nahar and As-Safir published on Saturday this documents, in which Hariri’s demands included the withdrawal of the false witnesses file and the arrest warrants issued by Syria in former General Security chief Jamil as-Sayyed’s case, as well the removal of Palestinian weapons present outside the refugee camps.

Also among the demands were legislation making the Internal Security Forces (ISF) into an official branch and the forwarding to parliament of 69 draft bills produced by former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora’s cabinet.

According to the document, Hariri would in return agree to cancel the Lebanese government’s protocol with the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), stop Lebanese funding to the tribunal, and withdraw the Lebanese judges in it.

On Monday the STL filed indictments for the 2005 murder of former Premier Rafik Hariri.

Syrian-Saudi talks on a compromise to resolve the tensions reportedly failed just before oppositions minister along with eleventh minister resigned from government on January 12.

TRIPOLI MPS

On the other hand, eyes are turned to four Tripoli MPs whose decision on whether to name the opposition or the March 14 nominee for the premiership would play an important role in deciding the fate of the government.

Former PM Najib Miqati, Minister Mohammed Safadi, Ahmed Karami and Qassem Abdelaziz are expected to meet on Saturday to announce their final stance from parliamentary consultations that will be held on Monday and Tuesday.
