Lebanon marks Hariri assassination

rafiq_hariri_assassinationTens of thousands of Lebanese have gathered in Beirut's Biel center to mark the sixth anniversary of the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.

People of different faiths attended the ceremony from different regions of Lebanon on Monday.Hariri was assassinated on February 14,
Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, the son of the late leader, addressed the crowd.

In a reference to the collapse of his unity government in January, he accused his opponents of fabricating the popular vote.

“Fabricate the will of the voters as much as you want; steal their free decision as much as you want, I will not abandon my roots,” Hariri told his opponents.

Hariri's government collapsed after 11 Hezbollah ministers and their allies resigned over tensions stemming from the Washington-sponsored Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL).

STL was set up some two years after Rafiq Hariri's assassination to look into the incident.

According to unconfirmed reports, STL is likely to issue an indictment against some Hezbollah members.

The popular Lebanese Resistance Movement has vehemently denied involvement in the assassination, denouncing STL as an Israeli-American plot trying to sow discord in the country.
