lebnanesThe families of the 11 Lebanese pilgrims kidnapped in Syria have staged a sit-in in front of Qatar’s embassy in Beirut, declaring Doha responsible for the lives of the abductees. Sheikh Abbas Zogheib, tasked by Lebanon’s Higher Islamic Shiite Council to follow up on the

issue of the abductees, also participated in the Friday sit-in. Saudi Arabia and Qatar have for months been providing insurgents with weapons to fight Syrian government forces. Zogheib said similar sit-ins are also planned to be held in front of the US and Saudi embassies in Beirut. The 11 Lebanese pilgrims were returning from a pilgrimage in Iran when they were kidnapped by Syrian insurgents near Syria’s northern province of Aleppo on May 22. On August, the Syrian insurgents also abducted 48 Iranian pilgrims in Damascus. Iran has asked Turkey and Qatar to help secure the release of the kidnapped pilgrims, saying these two states as well as the US are responsible for the lives of the Iranian abductees. Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.
