syed ali khamnai lebnaonLeader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says resistance and cooperation among Lebanese groups and tribes can avert plots by certain countries that try to make regional woes spill over into Lebanon.

“Certain foreigners are trying to spread problems of specific regional countries to Lebanon but cooperation and convergence

among Lebanese groups and tribes and (their) reliance on the important value of resistance can foil these moves,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in a Thursday meeting with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman who is in Tehran to participate in the 16th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran.

The Leader added that Lebanon is an “important and sensitive” country in the region and stated that Lebanese officials have managed to resolve numerous problems through resisting against plots that were religiously divisive.

Ayatollah Khamenei described national dialogue as the “right policy” in Lebanon, adding that the country’s president, the prime minister and the speaker of the parliament have very well coped with domestic issues and this consensus should be retained.

The Leader once again expressed opposition to foreign interference in Syria and said the unrest in the Middle Eastern country will be settled only by preventing the arms shipment to ‘irresponsible’ groups.
Suleiman, for his part, said that his country still needs to show resistance and added that the Lebanese government is determined to lay the ground for dialogue and cooperation to prevent the spillover of any foreign tension into the country.

The Lebanese president stressed the importance of further expanding relations with Iran and expressed hope that the ongoing NAM summit in Tehran and the Islamic Republic’s presidency of the movement would bring about positive and practical results in various issues, including Palestine.

He emphasized that Lebanon opposes any foreign intervention in Syria and believes that the ongoing crisis in the country should be settled through dialogue.

The 16th NAM summit kicked off in Tehran on Thursday with an inaugural speech by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei.

NAM, an international organization with 120 member states, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. It represents nearly two-thirds of the UN members.
