parelmant lebLebanon has criticized the Arab League (AL) for its recent decision to offer military support to militants fighting the Syrian government, Press TV reports.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour made the criticism at a press conference in Beirut on

Thursday after returning from an AL meeting in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

“What Arab League regulation allows us to intervene in the domestic affairs of another state, especially if this intervention is a military one?”

Mansour described the decision as a very dangerous one, which could have negative consequences, particularly for Syria’s neighbors.

Mansour reiterated Beirut’s stance that Syrian membership in the Arab League should be reinstated, arguing that this could help reach a political solution to end violence in the country.

On Wednesday, AL secretary Nabil Elaraby said that ministers meeting in Cairo had invited Syria's Western-backed opposition umbrella group, the so-called Syrian National Coalition, to attend the Arab summit in the Qatari capital, Doha, on March 26 and 27.

A statement issued by the 22-member bloc said that Arab states were free to offer military support to militants fighting against the government President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria plunged into unrest in March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil, which Damascus says is being orchestrated from outside the country.

There are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting the Assad government are foreign nationals.

Damascus says the West and its regional allies, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the armed groups, who have been condemned by several international human rights organizations for committing war crimes.
