lebnanon troopsThe Lebanese army has continued its operation to crush the deadly violence in the northern city of Tripoli.

Early on Wednesday, the army entered the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood of the city which has been suffering from a spillover of conflict from neighboring Syria.

Lebanese soldiers carried out raids and removed various barriers in the area.

Also on Wednesday, Lebanon’s Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi said he is talking with Muslim scholars in Tripoli to ensure the success of the military operations in the area.

“We are working for the sake of the city and we will not sacrifice it for various individuals,” he added.

Nearly two dozen people have been killed over the past week in clashes between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Tripoli.

“Our residents and children have the right to live in peace and security,” Rifi stressed, saying, “We must have the courage to describe ourselves as failures should we fail in ensuring the security of Tripoli.”

Lebanese troops in armored personnel carriers were deployed in the city on Tuesday and engaged in setting up military posts. The army conducted raids on suspect residences and arrested 75 suspects.
The fighting between the supporters and opponents of the Syrian president has pitted pro-Assad residents of Jabal Mohsen neighborhood against inhabitants of Bab al-Tabbaneh who support foreign-backed militants operating in Syria.
