Lebanese-FM-Gebran-Basil27-06-2014Lebanese Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Basil has warned against the spillover of terrorism in the Middle East to other parts of the world and called for a global campaign against the phenomenon.

At a Friday meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Beirut Mohammad Fathali, the Lebanese foreign minister noted that many threats have been posed to regional stability by terrorist groups.

He praised Iran’s “prominent role” in countering terrorism and said that the scourge should be eradicated through a united campaign by all world nations.

Over the past months, Lebanon has been suffering from terrorist attacks by al-Qaeda-linked militants as well as random rocket attacks, which are viewed as a spillover of the conflict in Syria.

The al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist Abdullah Azzam Brigades has claimed responsibility for a number of recent bombings in Lebanon, including a deadly attack on the Iranian Embassy in Beirut, which killed 23 people, last November.

Meanwhile, Iraq and Syria have been the scene of violence by Takfiri terrorist groups, which have pushed both nations to the brink of catastrophic humanitarian crises.

During the meeting with Basil, Fathali underlined Iran’s support for stability in Lebanon and condemned the terrorists’ plots to create insecurity in the country.

The Iranian diplomat pointed to the religious and ethnic diversity in Lebanon and noted that interaction with all the Lebanese political currents is part of the Islamic Republic’s permanent policy.

He also praised the peaceful coexistence in Lebanon and the country’s resistance against Israel as two major characteristics of the Lebanese nation.
