Lebanese-armyArsal-BekaaValleyAn attack by radical militants from al-Qaeda’s offshoot in Syria, al-Nusra Front, on Lebanon’s border towns has been blocked by figthers from Hezbollah resistance movement, a new report says.

According to Lebanon’s Daily Star newspaper, the fighting took place along the outskirts of the northeastern town of Arsal and the Bekaa Valley town of Al-Fakiha.

The paper cited a security source as saying on condition of anonymity that dozens of al-Nusra radicals were killed in the clashes along with at least two Hezbollah fighters.

Arsal and the area around it has been volatile due to presence of militants who support the ongoing deadly insurgency in Syria.

The Lebanese Army has launched a crackdown and tightened the noose on militants along the border to prevent the infiltration of armed men into Lebanon.

Hezbollah has been one of the main forces assisting the Lebanese army in securing the southern parts of the country since eruption of the war in Syria in 2011.

Syria sank into war in March 2011 when pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of Western and regional states.

The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.
