The Syrian army has retaken control of several areas in eastern Ghouta region as the battle against foreign-backed militants continues in the country.

Syrian troops have been engaged in operations to clear Ghouta of militants. The region is located near the capital, Damascus.

The Syrian army also targeted militant hideouts in the Khan al-Sheikh district in western Damascus countryside.

Heavy clashes are underway in the Jobar district near the Syrian capital as well.

In recent months, Syrian forces have managed to retake several militant-held areas around the capital.

Last month, Syrian troops recaptured the strategic town of Adra northeast of Damascus, securing highways as well as an industrial zone on its outskirts.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011. Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey - are reportedly supporting the militants operating in Syria.

More than 191,000 people have been killed in over three years of turmoil in the war-ravaged country, according to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The UN office says the figure could probably be an “underestimate of the real total number of people killed.”
