Iraq’s Kurdish Peshmerga fighters have reportedly entered the northern Syrian border town of Kobani to join the fight against the ISIL Takfiri militants.

“We have crossed over,” Reuters quoted an unnamed Peshmerga fighter as saying late on Friday.

Earlier in the day, a group of 150 fighters from Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government headed towards Turkey’s border crossing with Syria in the southern region of Morshid-pinar to reinforce Syrian Kurds fighting against the ISIL terror group.

Reports further said the Syrian Kurds, lining the road to the border, welcomed the Peshmerga fighters who waved their rifles in the air.

The Iraqi Kurdish fighters had spent the last three days in a Turkish military warehouse before heading for Kobani, also known as Ain al-Arab in Arabic.

“There have been so many delays and the Peshmerga are not to blame. The Turks are behind the delays,” said an official with the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Syrian Kurdish fighters in Kobani said a group of 10 Peshmerga fighters had entered the besieged town on Thursday through the border crossing with Turkey to study the geography of the area.

They later went back to the Turkish side of the border to prepare for the arrival of the group of 150 fighters awaiting deployment to the embattled town, the Syrian Kurds said.

The Turkish government had long been refusing the Kurds to join the anti-ISIL fight but unexpectedly announced last week that it would allow the Peshmerga to enter Kobani through the Turkish border.

Kobani and its surroundings have been under attack since mid-September, with the ISIL militants capturing dozens of nearby Kurdish villages and killing hundreds of people. More than 200,000 people have also fled across the border into Turkey.
