The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stressed Wednesday that the international community, represented by the United Nations and the Security Council, has failed to fulfill its duties, even though it is supposed to solve disputes, protect the states' sovereignty and prevent breaking out of wars.

During an interview with the official Portuguese TV channel, Assad said that the moderate opposition in Syria is just an illusion, and that the so-called 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant' (ISIL) and Al-Nusra Front takfiri groups are the main orchestrators of terrorism in the country, along with some other smaller factions.

The Syrian President highlighted that the western officials do not have the will to fight terrorism, noting that the Americans have announced the training of five thousand fighters more, who will represent another support for terrorists operating in Syria.

Moreover, Assad stressed that it is impossible to say that Syria is over when the people are united behind their government and army to fight terrorism, besides that the governmental institutions are still working, "and we are still offering the state's support and paying wages even in areas lying under the control of the terrorists themselves."

He also emphasized that the international community failed to fulfill its task, proved by the disability to protect several other countries, like Libya and Yemen.

President Assad underlined that the solution in Syria is only political, making clear that the other party, i.e. the opposition factions, convening in Geneva for Syria talks, has been chosen by the west.
