The Syrian army, backed by fighters from allied popular forces, has made new advances in strategic parts of the country and inflicted losses on the personnel and equipment of the militants.

On Friday, the Syrian troops managed to establish their control over several hills in the western province of Lattakia and kill a number of terrorists and destroy their equipment, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported.

The Syrian forces also conducted successful operations in the southwestern provinces of Suwayda and Dara’a. Reports say that a terror group leader named Rida Muhannad al-Masalmeh was also slain during the attacks.

Elsewhere in the central province of Homs, the government forces launched attacks on a number of hideouts and military bases belonging to Takfiri terrorists and killed a number of militants and destroyed some of their vehicles and ammunition.

The Syrian army also gained control over a number of areas in Damascus countryside, bolstering its defensive positions in the newly-liberated areas. A number of Takfiris were also killed during the intense clashes.

In the northwestern province of Aleppo, the army managed to destroy several militant hideouts and bases, and kill a number of terrorists. The army also retook control of areas stretching from al-Arba’een Mountains to the village of Abu Rayal in the province.

The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria, which started in March 2011, has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people and left over one million injured, according to the United Nations.

Syria blames the crisis on some countries, including Turkey and Saudi Arabia, saying that if it had not been for their support, the terror groups, particularly the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group, could have never taken control of the territories across the country.

The UN says 12.2 million people, including more than 5.6 million children, remain in need of humanitarian assistance. The foreign-sponsored militancy has also displaced nearly half of the country's population.
