At least 16 people have lost their lives and 35 others sustained injuries in a series of bomb blasts claimed by the Daesh Takfiri group in the northeastern Syrian city of Qamishli on the border with Turkey.

The triple explosions ripped through three restaurants in a Christian neighborhood in the center of the city on Wednesday, targeting people who had gathered to celebrate the New Year.

The Daesh terror group claimed responsibility for the bomb attacks in an online statement, saying that there were “dozens of dead and wounded in the bombings… in different parts of Qamishli city.”

The Kurdish-majority city of Qamishli, which is located 680 kilometers (420 miles) northeast of the capital Damascus in Hasakah province, is jointly controlled by forces of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and Syrian government forces.

Syrian forces have been battling militants, particularly Daesh terrorists, on different fronts throughout Syria since March 2011, when the foreign-sponsored militancy, which has claimed over 250,000 lives, plagued the Arab country.
