Bahrainis defy Quds Day rally ban

shiitenews bahrain quds rallyIn defiance of a government ban on Quds Day rallies in Bahrain, protesters have taken to the streets to mark the international event and have set fire to the Israeli flag.Witnesses say hundreds of Bahrainis took to the streets in the capital, Manama, and several villages to protest against the government ban on the anti-Israeli rally and show solidarity with Palestinians. 

Protesters set fire to the Israeli flag and called for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestine. This is the second consecutive year that Quds Day rallies have been banned in Bahrain. Anti-regime protesters say the Manama ban is due to the regime's fear that the gathering will turn into an anti-government demonstration. 

Protesters in Bahrain also Bahraini demonstrators also condemned government's criticism of the country's top cleric, Sheikh Issa Qassim, who has been accused of inciting sectarian tension. Several people were injured after Saudi-backed regime forces attacked demonstrators and tried to disperse the crowds by force. Dozens of protesters were also arrested. 

The late founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini, in August 1979 declared the last Friday of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan as Quds Day, calling for international rallies in support of Palestinians and against Israel. 

Millions of people around the world come out on this day, calling for an end to Israel's illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories.
