french-armyA new report says around 200 French nationals have traveled to Syria in the past year to join foreign-backed militants fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The report published in French daily Le Monde said many of these French nationals are fighting alongside extremist groups like the al Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front.

The newspaper's cited figures from the country’s security services and noted dozens of these militants have already returned to France.

According to the report, officials in Paris are worried about the risk of terrorist attacks by those returning home from Syria.

The Syria crisis began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

On May 18, Assad said militants from 29 different countries are fighting against the government in different parts of the country.
