Yemens HouthisThousands of Houthi demonstrators have taken to the streets in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a to demand the prosecution of those responsible for the killing of more than a dozen Shia Muslims.

On Sunday, the protesters gathered outside Yemen’s National Security Intelligence Agency headquarters under a rally called, Loyalty to the Blood of Our Martyrs.

The demonstrators urged Yemeni officials to exercise their rights and prosecute the culprits.

“We came out in support of our martyrs and to say that these demonstrations will be victorious because we will not let the blood of our martyrs go to waste. This is the message that we want to send to the criminals responsible for the killings,” a demonstrator said on condition of anonymity.

Another protester said, “We came out today to send the message that we will not let the pure blood of our martyrs and the lives they sacrificed be lost in vain.”

The demonstrators also chanted slogans in condemnation of the National Security Intelligence, and stated that the agency serves the interests of foreign nations rather than those of Yemenis.

“The National Security Intelligence in Yemen does not seek to protect the nation or Yemeni people. Rather, it only pursues to safeguard the interests of other nations. It does not protect our nation from the relapsing foreign intervention. Such an entity has only proven to work against the Yemeni people,” a protester said.

Meanwhile, members of the Yemeni National Dialogue Conference have expressed outrage over the latest deaths of Shia Muslims in the country, and staged a series of sit-ins during the dialogue discussions.

They pressed for justice to be served against the National Security Intelligence Agency.

On June 9, Yemeni forces killed 13 Shia protesters and wounded 100 others during a demonstration outside the headquarters of the National Security Intelligence Agency in Sana’a.

The protesters were demanding the dismantling of the agency services because of its involvement in suppression of political activists under ousted dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The protesters were also demanding the release of the Houthis being held by the authorities.

Human Rights Watch has demanded an investigation into the killings.

Yemen’s Zaidi population, also known as Houthis, have long been protesting about oppression and discrimination by Yemen’s Saudi-backed government.

The Houthi movement draws its name from the tribe of its founding leader Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi.
