syrian troopsSyrian army units have found a secret tunnel in the countryside of Damascus that was used by foreign-backed militants to transfer forces and arms in and out of the capital’s suburbs.

The 300-meter long tunnel, located in Harasta in the northeastern suburb of Damascus, lay 14

meters under the ground and was equipped with electricity and video cameras, Syrian media reported on Monday.

The Syrian government troops confiscated and defused a large number of explosive devices kept inside the tunnel.

The army units also carried out large-scale operations against the foreign-sponsored militants in several provinces across the country, inflicting heavy losses on them.

Over the past months, the Syrian army has achieved major victories in its battle against Takfiri groups across the Arab country, particularly in the western region of Qalamoun near the Lebanese border.

On June 5, Syrian troops regained control of the town of al-Thawra in al-Kiswah district near Damascus, killing a large number of militants. Sources said that army forces also destroyed militant hideouts in the nearby town of Zakia.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. Over 160,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the violence fueled by the foreign-backed militants.

According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
