Shiitenews MQM-SHIAShia Muslims have expressed their dissatisfaction over Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s policies towards them. Karachi-based MQM has failed to win hearts and minds of Shia Muslims.

The MQM’s way of politics is disliked by many people. The reason to dislike MQM is its policy based on use of force or threats to muster support for its cause. Two such incidents were recently witnessed in two funeral processions in Karachi.

In both cases, MQM’s activists tried to politicize the funeral processions. They wanted the coffins to be wrapped in MQM’s flags that were against the normal Shia religious norms. Ordinary Shia Muslims disliked it. Even Shia parties’ flags are not wrapped up on the coffins according to normal practice.

MQM claims to have introduced the politics of religious tolerance. MQM claims it is against terrorism. MQM claims to be a partner in war on terrorism. This stated policy of the MQM makes it a rival of the extremist, fanatics and banned terrorist outfits and their supporters.

But, facts remain sacred and facts say vice versa. MQM has always remained in contact with sectarian outfits and their patrons. One of its MNAs attended programmes of a banned terrorist outfit Sipah-e-Sahaba. A delegation of this outfit had visited Nine Zero. Some of its influential eminent members remain closer to the scholars who back Sipah-e-Sahaba.

On one hand, MQM’s tilt towards sectarian outfit and their patrons are known to Shia Muslims and on the other; they recall what MQM’s city nazim Mustafa Kamal said about Shia Muslim youths after terrorist attack on Ashura procession in 2009.

MQM’s hooligans thrashed Shia Muslim youths in Malir on Eid al Azha 2011. One of the MQM’s MNAs patronized the hooligans.

There are many cases where MQM’s words don’t match its actions toward Shia Muslims. Shia Muslim areas have remained less developed despite the fact that they remained in government since General Pervez Musharraf’s tenure as President of Pakistan.

Shia Muslims are of the views that not a single resolution was moved in National Assembly, Senate and Provincial Assembly by the MQM to condemn the genocide of Shia Muslims in Pakistan. Neither their legislators brought this issue for debate and for a policy to end the genocide.

MQM shouldn’t forget what the analysts say about MQM-Shia relations. A senior journalist said that MQM’s chief Altaf Hussain copy a Shia zakir when he speaks. Independent observers recall that Shia intellectuals had helped MQM during its rainy days.

Now Shia Muslim says that banned outfits supporters have hijacked the MQM. They said that that group has fielded MQM against Shia Muslims and make more plans to lead MQM that way. Shia Muslims are aware of who is doing what against them. Historically, Shia Muslims cannot be tamed through use of force or threats. MQM must not be a pawn in dirty anti-Shia game. Otherwise its mindset will deprive MQM of remaining support in the Shia-majority areas.
