Tension in Gilgit Baltistan heightened after arrest of Agha Ali Rizvi students

giraftarTension prevailed in Gilgit-Baltistan province after eminent Shia leader Agha Ali Rizvi and several students were arrested in Gilgit.

Agha Ali Rizvi had expressed solidarity with the students and joined their protest against non-acceptance of their demand.

They were demanding special flights to take students back to Islamabad.

The students had arrived in Gilgit-Baltistan province to celebrate Eid with their relatives. Since the travelling by road is not possible for security reasons, they arrived at the airport. They are stranded there for last many days.

Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik also visited Gilgit and assured that special flight would be arranged for the students and foreign tourists. However, no flight was arranged so far.

On the other hand, Shia organisations of the province including Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen have demanded immediate release of Agha Ali Rizvi and all the students forthwith.

The MWM G-B chapter’s president Allama Hafiz Hussain Noori led a protest sit-in at airport and warned the government to take notice of the situation. He also denounced the police and local administration for the arrest of students and Agha Ali Rizvi.

Allama Aijaz Behishti, chief of MWM Youth Affairs, has inquired about health of Ishaq Jalal, the journalist who was injured in police torture while covering the protest of the students.
