Former Senator belonging to Pakistan People’s Party Faisal Raza Abidi was arrested in the wee hours of Saturday as heavy contingents of the police and rangers conducted raid in New Rizvia Society to nab him.

Charges against him were not yet disclosed by the law enforcement agencies hence his arrest has been depicted as illegal custody. He is an outspoken Shia Muslim politician who remained vocal against the violent extremists of the banned Deobandi outfits such as proscribed ASWJ/Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Taliban etc. He also denounced Lal Masjid cleric for his pro-Taliban stance alongside support to the violence against innocent Muslims.
Abidi remained active advocating the military operation against the terrorists and also held many programs to highlight the sacrifices of martyrs of armed forces. He condemned the takfirism of the Taliban and ASWJ who were involved in massacre of army public schoolchildren and female teachers.
He tendered resignation as PPP’s senator because his party failed to advocate the ideology of its founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who always defended the oppressed segments of Pakistani society. He was a close aide of former president Asif Zardari.
His arrest has evoked stiff protest and instant reaction from ordinary Pakistanis who condemned the PPP’s Sindh Government and law enforcement agencies for arrest of Abidi. They demanded his immediate release.
